About us

The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry has a worldwide reputation for excellence in Orthopaedic research. Oswestry Hospital is a NHS Trust hospital based near Gobowen is a specialist hospital in Orthopaedic treatments.

A partnership with the Institute of Orthopaedics has been fruitful in many areas of research and teaching. The Institute undertook to build and equip the OsCell laboratory to the highest standards in 1997 under the direction of Dr Brian Ashton, world famous stem cell scientist. The team in Gotenburg of Mats Brittberg, Lars Petersen and Anders Lindahl were instrumental in helping us set up this OsCell service and we are grateful for their openness and honesty in sharing their techniques.

A team of cell biologists, pathologists, radiologists and clinicians combine to develop and study techniques of cell engineering. Management is by a board consisting of Paul Harrison, Dr James Middleton and James Richardson, with advice from bacteriology department of Shrewsbury. Current researchers include Professor Sally Roberts, Professor Iain McCall, Professor James Richardson, Dr Eustace Johnson, Dr Paul Harrison, Eric Robertson, Mr Abhijit Bhosale, Mr Graham Smith, Dr Victor Cassar-Pullicino, Dr Stefan Bajada, Dr John McClure, Dr Charles Mangham, Dr Heather Smith and collaborators at many other centres across Europe. Always the support of clinicians, theatre staff, finance department, photography department and probably everyone at some point in the team at the Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry helps to keep the project moving forward.
