In August 2009 the first meeting between Professor James Richardson and the team at Liverpool who run tissue transplantation services took place. The meeting was able to agree that there is now an ability to transplant knee or hip joints. Paul Rooney is head of research and development and his team have developed methods of preserving the chondrocytes in cartilage following preservation. This means that a transplanted knee joint would have 70% of functioning chondrocytes, so maintaining cartilage quality.
Professor James Richardson at Oswestry has been transplanting menisci for over 10 years now and usually combining this with ACI to restore the lining cartilage as well as the 'floating' meniscus cartilage. The new tissues available will provide opportunities for faster rehabilitation as the complete bone and cartilage unit fo the knee as well as the meniscus can be replaced.
