OsCell is the only NHS facility which has its own laboratory for growing Chondrocytes for Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation.

In addition to the clinical service, OsCell is involved in a number of research projects.

Under Principal Clinical Scientist, Paul Harrison, research into developing new techniques to improve success in cartilage repair is underway.

Clinical trials are also underway. At present we are doing a trial looking at if ACI is of benefit for patients who have and osteotomy for unicompartmental knee arthritis (see osteotomy)

Also a trial called ACTIVE is in progress, which will look at ACI versus alternative treatments for cartilage injuries. This trial is funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC)
